Happy Valentine's Day!
History of this holiday for lovers has numerous possible origins. There are several legends as well as religious beliefs connected to St. Valentine. One of my favorite is from the Middle Ages, in France and England it was believed that the birds mating season began on February 14 and thus supported ideas of this date and celebration.
In 1415 Charles, Duke of Orleans wrote the oldest valentine to his wife in a form of a poem while held prisoner in the Tower of London.
In the eary 1700s, Americans first began exchanging handmade valentines to friends and loved ones on this holiday.

History aside, hearts appear frequently in fashion. Yves Saint Laurent loved the heart motif and used it in his work. I wish I lived in NYC, Paris, London, Hong Kong, or Tokyo because today YSL is giving away tote bags with heart shaped USB flash-drives containing photos from the Spring/Summer 2009 Manifesto Collection. Lucky.
Also, Marc Jacobs is loving hearts this season with cut out leather heart shapes layered on top of each other on clutches and handbags. There is even a pair of wedge sandals with a heart cutout in the wedge heel, its pretty cool. He doesn't stop there, dresses, watches, umbrellas; you name it.
If you think about it, hearts are all around us and everywhere. They come in and out of style, but are timeless. Designs range from super corny, plain red and simple, to tattoo style with thorns.
